Friday, January 4th, 2008
Tip! First of all the cigar tip must be cut. This is best done with a tool well adapted to the task as a pair of cigar scissors or a guillotine cutter.

King Edward VII, President Ulysses S. Grant, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx… these are names, and not mere names, but names that are huge in history. Could you draw out any difference or any common point among these men? Well, the fact is-they were all heavy cigar smokers. Cigars and men, what is with this pair? In the past, there was that stereotype that only rich males are the ones who smoke cigar. Nowadays, there is no definite line that separates the rich men from the not-so-rich men when it is going to be based with cigar smoking. Any man and today woman could buy and enjoy a stick, sticks or many sticks of cigar. There is one thing certain. There is a difference between the excellent and poor cigar. You must know if that cigar is worth-buying. There are certain tips to follow when buying one. * Observe if the wrapper has smooth and a bit shine feature. Make sure that it does not have blemishes and it must not be too firm. * Give the cigar a gentle squeeze. This way you would be able to determine if indeed it is good enough if it is resilient to hold its shape when you press it. * Refrain from choosing a cigar with soft or hard spots because it is a sign that it is not of good quality and not of good construction. * Try to take a smell of the cigar and if it does not have that aroma, drop it off. * Refrain from buying a lumpy cigar. Yopu could check out if its lumpy or not by giving it a gentle squeeze. Also check the wrapper. Reffrain from picking cigars that have wrapper discoloration. * Make your present more special by adding up a cigar cutter or an ashtray that would impress the receiver. * Give it with sincerity of course. It is fun to hear lines like: “Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.” This is according to Sir Sigmund Freud. “A woman is only a woman: but a good cigar is a smoke.” this one is according Sir Rudyard Kipling in his poetry. This only shows how cigar smoking is regarded by men since then. Now, even women are into smoking. Despite all the health hazards, people still go on smoking for no general reason at all. What matters is that smoking must be done with moderation and responsibility. Not merely smoke because you want to show-off your so vcalled “manly’ thing.

Cigar smoking is considered much less harmful to the health than cigarette smoking. It is widely assumed so, because cigars are considered to have less content of tobacco than cigarettes.

Tip! The most important aspect of a cigar humidor is its climate control system. This is what keeps the product fresh, preserving both the look and the taste of the cigars over long periods of time.

When it comes to cigars, nothing can beat the handmade. Cigars that underwent from the hands of a skilled craftsman always guarantee of a pleasurable smoke, which the machine made, could not match. Handmade cigars is not a just a work of art, it is a product of patience and passion. Patience because making handmade cigars is not that easy and fast, it will take some time before the final product is ready for packing. Passion because, the makers of handmade cigars have poured so much time to improve their craft, and have shed blood and tears just to make the best cigar there is in the world. It has become their pride more than a job. But just how do these handmade cigars are made? You want to know how? Not take a look and be amazed of the wonders behind handmade cigars. After harvesting the finest tobacco leaves, the leaves are first cured. This is done in order to release the sugar content and the remaining water in the tobacco leaves at the same time protecting the leaves from decomposing. Curing process can take up to 4-6 weeks the most and also pending on the kind of the tobacco leaves, the color intended for the leaves to achieve. The second phase of the process is the fermentation stage wherein the cured leaves are subjected to a controlled temperature and relative humidity. During fermentation, the flavor, aroma and other characteristics of a fine tobacco are reached. Once the tobacco leaves had aged gracefully, they will be classified according to their use, whether as a filler, binder, or wrapper. Even during at this stage the tobacco leaves are still carefully watched to ensure that they still have the moist required to avoid decay. At this time also the leaves will have to undergo continuous baling again and again until the desired maturity of the leaves is obtained which will make it ready for the actual making of the cigars by hands. Now that the leaves are primed for rolling, they are brought to the table of the master blender. They will be sorted according to the desired color and shape. Each color and shape requires different blends of tobacco leaves. A master blender with an extensive training in choosing tobacco can identify which leaf goes with another leaf in order to achieve a perfect blend. After choosing the tobacco leaves the master blender will bring the blended tobacco to the workstation of the master roller. This is the time for the master roller to unleash his or her skills in rolling the tobacco fillers into different shapes, after which a binder tobacco leaf is wrapped around the blended filler to hole them together. With the help of a specified molder, the rolled tobacco will be pressed in order to get the desired shape. Wrapping another tobacco leaf around the rolled tobacco to give it a smooth and clean finish does the final touches. The finish product is yet to undergo another aging process before they are sold to the market. The process of making cigars by hands is not that really easy. It takes patience and passion. No wonder they are the most expensive pieces.

Tip! Between two years and five years is where most other cigars peak – they become the high school quarterback, the prom queen, the senior class president. The stronger bodied cigars – the Havana Bolivars, for instance – are thought to generally age better over a greater duration of time, and peak during these ‘toddler’ years.

As one continues to develop his taste for cigars, one would start to look for better quality brands to satisfy his urge and longing for a good smoke. Starting out with light smokes, one will also want to try out cigars that have considerable strength – and experience what real cigar smoking is all about. There are also those who start to appreciate spicy types and flavored cigars. The choices out there are limitless and different cigar brands offer various premium cigars to cater to different cigar smokers’ preferences. But one should understand that fine cigars are not all about the strength and power these possess – but about the appropriate blend that is both rich & smooth to one’s taste. Fine cigars are well constructed, have a consistent burn, easy draw and excellent tobacco taste. And depending on a particular individual’s taste, a mild cigar may serve him well – as a potent cigar does to a smoker of strong & full-bodied cigars – mild or strong, there are fine cigars that fall under either of the two classifications. Cigar oasis – Wrapping Up the Cigar Boom

Tip! You do not need to inhale the cigar to your lungs. Just take a slow drag and let the smoke stay in your mouth for a while before exhaling.

At age 98, the infamous cigar aficionado George Burns said, “If I had taken my doctor’s advice and quit smoking when he advised me to, I wouldn’t have lived to go to his funeral.” While it’s tempting for us to use Mr. Burns as the poster-child for the anti-anti-smoking movement which is gaining little ground against anti-smoking legislation in the United States, we would be hard-pressed to answer why the honor shouldn’t go to Mark Twain, Peter Falk, Sigmund Freud (”Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”) or Rudy Giuliani. As more and more restaurants find themselves under regulation to prohibit smoking and many of the cigar bars from the last decade close their doors, it seems that today’s cigar smoker is a bit lonely.

Tip! After deciding how you’re going to cut your cigar, you need to know where to cut it. Cutting off the cigar’s head, the general rule is to slice the cigar just past the shoulder (where it stops being round).

The fad of cigar smoking regains its popularity way back in the mid 1990s when famous celebrities pose willingly in front of the camera smoking a stick of cigar. Millions of people around the world are now addicted to cigar smoking, and the number is still increasing. The alarming issue of cigar smoking is that more and more younger men and women and even kids are also into this addiction. The increase of the smoking population is directly proportional to the increase of the number of people suffering from cigar-smoking related diseases. Smoking cigars and health are somewhat of Siamese twins, wherever one goes, the other follows. Smoking cigars and health issues pose major concern among health care professionals and health practitioners worldwide. The main substance that is found in a cigar is the tobacco, which according to the World Health Organization’s report that most deaths in the world is attributed to the tobacco smoking which ranked second among other causes. Furthermore, according to the same report that in ten adults, one dies of tobacco smoking and that includes cigar smoking. It is feared that tobacco smoking claims each year 5 million death tolls in worldwide proportion. Smoking cigars and health related concerns include the possibility of acquiring coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases and almost all types of cancer. The burden of diseases brought about by cigar smoking is debilitating because it stripped off the healthy life years of a person. Many families are crippled by the loss of a breadwinner who passed away from smoking related diseases. The economic burden is just as heavy because of the costly medical treatments of these smoking related diseases. Smoking cigars and health are like two weights in a seesaw. There is never a time that the two achieve a balance. Some health organizations are making an effort to completely eradicate cigar smoking addiction. This effort might be gargantuan a task which will surely take more years or even eternity, but the important key is to minimize the health-detrimental effects of cigar smoking so that more lives will be saved and more families will spared from a loss of a loved one. Some may call smoking cigar as a hobby while others named it a vice. It doesn’t really matter how would they call it because the bottom line is cigar smoking is as expensive as regaining one’s health from the life threatening diseases caused by cigar smoking. The price of smoking cigar is great that cigar smokers may not be capable of paying. Cigar smoking is a choice but a healthy life is a much better choice. The choice is yours to make.
